July 9- Bad ideas

All bad things spread fast, ideas are no exceptions. In February we wrote an article on why reservation in private jobs is a bad idea, it was regarding the bandh in Karnataka demanding reservation. Now the Haryana government has drafted a similar ordinance to make 75% of private jobs reserved for local residents of Haryana.

The law supposedly will apply to all jobs which pay less than Rs 50,000 and non-compliance will attract stringent punishment by the State government.

The intervention itself is stupid and regressive, but the timing, takes the absurdity to another level. When governments across the world are trying to leverage the global aversion towards China in making their countries an important part of the global supply chains, interventions like these make us think if Indian states are in an isolationist silo.

Last month the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a host of reforms to ease private businesses and encourage economic activity. It has taken three decades and a global pandemic for the government to slide in these small reforms. But the Haryana government does not seem to bother about any of these factors and is supposedly implementing its ‘electoral promise’. The economic future of the State is definitely in a limboo along with the Constitutional promise of freedom to move freely and to work freely.

[Article] You can read our old article here. We tried to provide moral and practical reasons as to why reserving jobs in the private sector is essentially a bad idea.
